Washington Crossing the Delaware (David Shulman)

A hard, howling, tossing water scene.
Strong tide was washing hero clean.
"How cold!" Weather stings as in anger.
O Silent night shows war ace danger!
The cold waters swashing on in rage.
Redcoats warn slow his hint engage.
When star general's action wish'd "Go!"
He saw his ragged continentals row.
Ah, he stands - sailor crew went going.
And so this general watches rowing.
He hastens - winter again grows cold.
A wet crew gain Hessian stronghold.
George can't lose war with's hands in;
He's astern - so go alight, crew, and win!

PS:- Thank you MP!

Roll the dice (Charles Bukowski)

if you’re going to try, go all the
way.
otherwise, don’t even start.

if you’re going to try, go all the
way.
this could mean losing girlfriends,
wives, relatives, jobs and
maybe your mind.

go all the way.
it could mean not eating for 3 or 4 days.
it could mean freezing on a
park bench.
it could mean jail,
it could mean derision,
mockery,
isolation.
isolation is the gift,
all the others are a test of your
endurance, of
how much you really want to
do it.
and you’ll do it
despite rejection and the worst odds
and it will be better than
anything else
you can imagine.

if you’re going to try,
go all the way.
there is no other feeling like
that.
you will be alone with the gods
and the nights will flame with
fire.

do it, do it, do it.
do it.

all the way
all the way.

you will ride life straight to
perfect laughter, its
the only good fight
there is.

Time

In endless wait
to make things
happen
to strike off
from the scroll
things done
to make life
living.

Of invention

Brownian Lacrosse.
Like a modern day
Interplanar Quidditch.
Rippling streams of fire

In seas of nothingness.
Near scalding sungrazers
Fueling off, cores ablaze
Focus, resolve, purpose et al.
Trailing matter searing trajectories
Swooshing and swerving,
Their remnants, luminous,
Blinding momentarily
Melting away, in flashes
To the place, without time
Where they were born.
Game of choice.
Sport of invention.

To spareness: An Assay (Jane Hirshfield)

You lean toward non-existence
but have not yet become it entirely.
For this reason, you can still be praised.

The tree unleafing enters your dominion.
An early snowfall shows you abide in all things.

Your two dimensions are line and inclination.
Therefore desire,
incindering each mote of its object, itself is spare.

                                                      The late paintings of Turner
prove your slender depths without limit
The beauty too of shakuhachi and cello.

“Winter darkness. Rain. No crickets singing.”
—you are there, pulling hard on the rope-end.

Remembering you, I remember also compassion.
I cannot explain this.
Nor how you live in a teabowl
or in a stone that has spent a long time in a river.
Nor the way you at times can signal your own contradiction,
meaning extra, but not by much—
“Brother, can you spare a dime,” one thin man asks of another.

Any room, however cluttered, gestures toward you,
declaring:
                “Here lives this, not that.”
In logic, the modest “<” sign gestures toward you.

Your season is surely November,
your fruit, persimmons ripening by coldness.

Your sound is a crow cry, a bus idling at night by roadside.

Without apparent effect,
and so you remind of starlight on the colors of a cow’s hide.

Your proposition, like you, is simple, of interest only to the human soul:
vast reach of all that is not, and still something is.

The Power of Words (Yoko Ono)

Your words will run around forever to reverberate in the ocean of the world like a pebble you dropped in the water.

Let’s believe in that power – the large power that could move the mountain and the ocean. yes.

Urm

Little far departed
Much
These worlds
I traipse through
One room to another
Stunning the diversity
Of exhibits, glass cases
Mind boggling, the bane
To be stuck
With a season ticket

Happy 235th Ms. Austen!

What is it?
It is noisy.
Isn’t it always?
It’s the precipice.
The wind howls its siren call.
The waters, foaming to the rocks
Gulls screeching, circling.
Should I go to the greens?
Why the greens?
So I can hear the leaves whisper.
The twigs crackle to moonsong
And night souls brush by trees.
Wouldn’t that be a little scary?
Why? Is that your notion of fear?
I see yours’ is the rocks.

To be continued...
(So we'd like to think.)
